Quebec Mosque

Canadians by the thousands attended vigils Monday night after six men were gunned down at a Quebec City mosque during Sunday evening prayers.

About a thousand people gathered in Kingston.

The vigil in Springer Market Square featured speakers from Queen’s…the Islamic Society of Kingston and others including Kingston and the Islands MP Mark Gerretsen.

Gerretsen told the crowd …”The way we will fight this is not through violence, but through love and compassion.”   He went on to say diversity is what makes Canada stronger and better.

Thousands gathered in Quebec City last night where Prime Minister Trudeau told the vigil Canada stands with the Muslim community.

27 year-old Alexandre Bissonnette has been charged with six counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder.  Police say he acted alone.

Clown Mask Robber

A man wearing a white clown mask has robbed the Parkway Grocery Store at gunpoint.

Kingston Police say the man had a small handgun and demanded money from the clerk at around 8:45 Sunday night.  He left the store with a quantity of cash.

Police think he may have got into a vehicle in the parking lot of the mall at Parkway and Princess.

Knife Waving Man

A 38 year old Kingston man is facing a handful of charges after a man threatened to kill the staff in a bar with a large knife and said he was going to bomb the place.

Police say bar owner managed to force the man out the door and he left in a truck at around 1a.m. Monday.

They say the man was upset about a phone call from his girlfriend.

Police seized a knife when they stopped the vehicle and arrested the man.

He has been charged with possession of a dangerous weapon, possession of a prohibited weapon, mischief, uttering death threats and two counts of breach probation.

Feb Fest – Hip Stone

The Feb Fest opening ceremony at 5 p.m. on Thursday will include the official unveiling of The Tragically Hip commemorative stone in Springer Market Square.

The stone with The Hip’s lyric…Everybody was in it from miles around….commemorates the August 20th live broadcast of The Tragically Hip concert that filled the square with over 25,000 people.

A five minute video documenting the concert will be shown and after the unveiling, the public can skate to Tragically Hip tunes on the rink in the Square.

Smashed Windows

There has been some nasty vandalism at Prince Charles Public School in Verona.

Seven windows in the school were smashed sometime between 3 p.m. Sunday and 6 a.m. Monday.  Frontenac OPP say the damage is estimated at $5,000.

Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to call the OPP or contact Crime Stoppers.
