Wild Weekend – Roads

It was a wild weekend on the roads with two reports of vehicles hitting bears and an OPP cruiser being hit by a vehicle.

The OPP was called to investigate a vehicle hitting a bear on the 401 eastbound at Palace Road in Napanee on Saturday night.  The second incident took place on Highway 15 last night.

The OPP cruiser was reportedly hit by a passing vehicle during a traffic stop on Sunset Shores Lane in South Frontenac on Saturday night.  Police haven’t released any information on that crash either.

Napanee Fire

Fire crews in Napanee were able to quickly take care of a potentially dangerous situation at Lennox and Addington County Hospital in Napanee.

Smoke was discovered in the south wing of the hospital Sunday morning and staff and patients were evacuated from the area.  The smoke had come from a small fire in a garden outside the building.  It was quickly put out and the smoke was cleared from the building.  Damage was minor.

Highway 401 Construction

The plans are in place for the final round of construction to widen the 401 to three lanes across Kingston.  Construction will begin in the spring on the section between Montreal Street and Highway 15.  It includes replacement of the Cataraqui River Bridge and is expected to take three years.

The MTO is also planning to reconfigure the interchanges at Highway 15 and Gardiners Road – but no dates have been announced for that work.

Supermoon

Look – up in the sky…it’s a bird…it’s a plane…it’s a Supermoon!

The brightest full moon in almost 69 years is lighting up the sky this week. The moon is closer to the Earth it has been since January 1948. The moon won’t look as big or as bright again for another 18 years.  In 2034, the moon will come even closer to Earth.
