Fire – Youth Shelter

Police and the Ontario Fire Marshalls office are investigating a fire in a bedroom at the Kingston Youth Shelter as a possible case of arson.

Firefighters were called to the shelter at 234 Brock Street around 10:25 Saturday night.

They quickly put out the fire in a second storey bedroom.

One resident was taken to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and alternate accommodation had to be arranged for the 15 residents of the shelter because of the fire and smoke damage.

Uber – Queen’s Prof

A business professor at Queen’s University says he believes most cities where ride sharing services are operating will have bylaws in place by the end of this year to legalize the services like Uber.

John-Kurt Pliniussen says Edmonton is showing other cities it can be done.

Edmonton is the first Canadian city to pass a bylaw regulating what it calls private transportation providers.

Kingston is considering what can be done after Uber launched its service in Kingston last year.

Polar Plunge

80 people took part in the Polar Plunge in Kingston on Sunday and raised over $38,000 for Special Olympics.

The final total of the amount raised won’t be known until later this week because online donations were being accepted.

Organizers hope the event will grow even more for next year.

The Polar Plunge was held as part of Feb Fest in Confederation Basin yesterday and attracted a crowd of about a thousand spectators.

Grand Theatre – Students – Symphony

And the Grand Theatre will be packed with grade four students today and tomorrow…many will be getting their first experience of a live performance of the Kingston Symphony.

Over 2,500 students from the Limestone District School Board and Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic Board will be introduced to classical music.

The Symphony Association, Queen’s School of Music and the school board started the Symphony Education Partnership over 20 years ago.
