Snow Story

Salters and sanders were out making their rounds after a couple of centimetres of snow overnight.  Police were asking you to clear off your windows before you drive.  They say one of the keys to avoiding a crash is to slow down and keep a safe distance between your vehicle and other vehicles.

They said you will need your winter driving skills all day.

The forecast called for 5-10cm of snow in the forecast and it will be blown around by strong winds.

Marine Museum Sold

Kingston developer Jay Patry says he’s planning something extraordinary on Kingston’s waterfront.

Patry Developments is buying the Kingston Marine Museum property from the federal government.  Its bid was $3.2 million.

Patry tells the Whig he is planning a high rise development on the site and wants to keep the Marine Museum and dry dock in place.  He says construction won’t start for several years.

He’s planning to sell properties he was planning to develop at 501 Frontenac Street, 630 Princess Street and J.E. Horton Public School in Barriefield.

Macdonald Day

Canada’s first prime minister was celebrated for his nation building during a Sir John A. Macdonald Day ceremony at his statue in City Park.

Right next to that ceremony…another group gathered to burn an effigy of Sir John A. Macdonald.  Idle No More Kingston says Macdonald should not be celebrated because of his policies toward indigenous people.

Idle No More Kingston denies it had anything to do vandalism after paint was tossed on the cars of Sir John A. Day organizer Art Milnes and Kingston and the Islands MP Mark Gerretsen.  Milnes also found the tires on his vehicle were slashed and says police found a burned Canadian flag under his vehicle.

Drug Raids

Kingston Police have charged three men in their early twenties with drug trafficking after seizing pot and cocaine during a drug raid.

Police executed search warrants at a high rise on Highway 15 and a home in Verona last Thursday night.  They seized $2,300 worth of marijuana, $9,500 worth of cocaine and approximately $3,000 in cash.

Police have also charged a 27 year old man with trafficking after arresting him at 2:30 in the morning last Friday in the area of Montreal and John Street. Police say they found cocaine with an approximate street value of $20,000 and found more cocaine and pot at a home in the area of Baiden Street and Portsmouth Avenue.

Stabbing Charge

A 43 year old man from Napanee has been charged after another man was stabbed in the hand during a dispute at a residence on Bridge Street East.

Police say the victim in the incident early Saturday morning suffered a minor injury.

Robert Pakul has been charged with uttering death threats and assault with a weapon.

Encore Winner

A Kingston couple enjoyed “Encore” Christmas when their lottery ticket paid off.

Jennifer and Cory King won $100,000 on the December 25th Lotto Max draw.

They had six of the seven winning numbers on Encore.

The winning ticket was purchased at Shoppers Drug Mart on Division Street in Kingston.

Now that the snow has arrived….The city and Utilities Kingston are reminding people to be a good neighbour and maybe even a Snow Angel.

They asking you to keep your sidewalk clear of snow and ice and help out your neighbour if you can be being a Snow Angel and giving them a hand clearing their driveway or sidewalk.
