Education Contracts

The province says details of its tentative contract deals with public elementary teachers and school support staff won’t be released until the agreements are ratified.

The tentative agreements were reached yesterday with the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario and the Canadian Union of Public Employees.

It means both unions will end their work-to-rule campaigns.

They were the last major education sector agreements to be reached in a tough and controversial round of bargaining under a new system.

Transportation Plan

An update to Kingston’s transportation plan is already getting a rough ride and it won’t be presented to Kingston City Council for another two weeks.

Critics are calling it short sighted because it concentrates too much on building and managing roads and too little on public transit and active transportation.

The plan outlines spending a total of $740 million dollars over the next 20 years.  That includes $96 million for active transportation, $85 million for public transit and $500 million for road project including a bridge over the Cataraqui River and the railway overpass on John Counter Boulevard.

The study estimates an increase in public transit use of just 9% over the next 20 years.

Aging Survey

Kingston is conducting a telephone research project to help make the city more age-friendly.

The city, United Way, Kingston Police, KFL&A Public Health and the Seniors Association have teamed up on the research project.

They’ve hired Nanos Research to conduct a telephone survey with 600 adults who are 45 years of age and older.

The city says people 45 and over make up 44% of Kingston’s population.

Radon Gas

It’s something you probably aren’t aware of and it could have deadly consequences.

Radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer and it is present in a lot of homes.

99 homes were tested for radon gas in Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington as part of a Health Canada survey in 2011.  11% had above acceptable levels of the gas.

The Canadian Cancer Society says only 5% of families have had their homes tested for radon.

Test kits are available and more information is online at:
