Causeway

The LaSalle Causeway re-opened to traffic shortly after 7:30 this morning.

Public Works and Government Services Canada announced yesterday repairs would take until seven this morning.  It originally said the work would be done seven hours earlier than that.

People who believed the bridge would re-open to traffic at seven this morning where caught in a long line of traffic waiting until it actually opened.

Jumper Talked Down

Kingston Police say they were able to talk a woman out of jumping off the LaSalle Causeway Tuesday night.

The 52 year old woman had climbed about 30 to 40 feet up the bridge structure.

Police, Kingston Fire and Rescue and the Canadian Coast Guard were on the scene and police eventually talked the woman into coming down from the bridge.

She was assessed by paramedics and transported to hospital where she was held under the Mental Health Act to receive medical care.

 Loyalist – Labour Deal

A marathon bargaining session has resulted in a tentative contract agreement for Loyalist Township employees.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees says the deal for the 64 employees with the Township was reached early yesterday – 15 hours after talks with municipal officials began.  CUPE Local 2150 represents public works, parks and recreation and inside workers.  A ratification vote will be held next week, and details about the contract won’t be released until union members and the township council have ratified the deal.

 Pop-Up Park

Something completely different will be popping up in downtown Kingston today.

Sydenham Street Revived is a pop-up park that will take place on Sydenham Street between Princess and Queen.

The temporary park project is a test to evaluate how many people will use the space and the economic impact on businesses in the area.

The pop-up park will feature art displays, special activities and a specially designed seating area and metal sculpture created by artist Stefan Duerst at his studio in Godfrey that was designed with the help of other local artists.

 Suspicious Fire

Kingston Police have confirmed they are involved in the investigation of a fire at 262 Weller Avenue early Wednesday morning.

Detectives with the major crime unit are working with fire inspector and the office of the Ontario Fire Marshall.

Nobody was injured in the fire that started shortly after one on Wednesday morning.

Bail Hearing – Woman – Murder

The bail hearing for a Napanee woman charged with killing her baby will continue in Napanee next Friday.  23 year old Kirsten Pemberton was arrested in Banff after the body of the infant was discovered in a residence on Palace Road in Napanee on May 9th.

Pemberton appeared in court in Kingston for the resumption of her bail hearing this week and it will continue next week.  She has been undergoing a 30 day psychiatric assessment at Providence Care in Kingston.

Sicko

Here’s hoping police can track down this sicko…Kingston Police say a man approached two teenage girls late Tuesday afternoon and asked them if they wanted to have sex.  It happened around five Tuesday afternoon as the girls were walking south on Montreal Street near Sutherland Drive.  They ran to the Mac’s convenience store to report the incident.

Description of man from Kingston Police news release:

“The male is described as Caucasian, approximately 50 years of age, had a hunched back, long face with freckles and wore glasses. He was wearing blue plaid dress shirt and blue jeans that were pulled up high.”
