Some of the rocks greatest bands have got their names from weird places, like Stone Temple Pilots liking the logo of the STP motor oil bottle then finding words that went with it.

The Foo Fighters are no different.  In 2010, Dave Grohl revealed that around the time of the first Foo Fighters record in 1995 he was reading a lot of books on UFO’s.

When talking to Clash magazine Grohl said: “Around the time that I recorded the first FF tape (that became the first record), I was reading a lot of books on UFO’s. Not only is it a fascinating subject, but there’s a treasure trove of band names in those UFO books!” he said.

“So, since I had recorded the first record by myself, playing all the instruments, but I wanted people to think that it was a group, I figured that FOO FIGHTERS (WW2 term for UFO’s) might lead people to believe that it was more than just one guy. Silly, huh?”

Recently during the Sonic Highway’s press tour, Grohl was on 60 Minutes and when Anderson Cooper asked him about the name, he said: “Had I imagined that it would last more than a month-and-a-half, I might have named it something else, it’s the dumbest band name ever.”
