Search for Suspect

Kingston Police are looking for a 20 year old woman who skipped a Monday court appearance on charges including attempted murder.

Police have issued a warrant for the arrest of Sara Smith.

She was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and possession of a dangerous weapon after an 18 year old woman was stabbed multiple times on Compton Street on December 13th of 2013.

Police says they believe Smith is actively trying to evade being arrested.

Attempted Murder

A Kingston man charged with attempted murder and setting a fire in a mobile home in Millhaven has been denied bail.

45 year old Barry Evans is being held in custody pending his next court appearance on July 7th.

He’s charged with three counts of attempted murder, along with several other offences, including arson, criminal harassment, uttering death threats and theft of a motor vehicle after the trailer was set on fire on May 30th.

Murder Suspect

The man suspected of murdering a 27 year old woman in Kingston last Thursday is still in critical condition in Kingston General Hospital.

The 30 year old suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

He’s the only suspect in the stabbing death of Kaitlan Babcock in a townhouse on Conacher Drive.

The Ontario Special Investigations Unit is investigating how Kingston Police handled the case.

Leadership Change – CFB Kingston

Kingston Mayor Bryan Paterson has presented a key to the city to the new commander of CFB Kingston.

Paterson attended the change of command ceremony in Thompson Drill Hall and welcomed Colonel Steven Kelsey as the new commander.

He takes over from Colonel Francois Changnon who is leaving after two years as base commander.

Wolfe Islander

Lots of news about the Wolfe Island Ferry today…

Kingston and the Islands MPP Sophie Kiwala announced the environmental assessment for a second ferry to serve the island will take place.

The MTO says it should be completed by the end of 2017.

The Wolfe Islander three will remain in Hamilton longer than expected.

It was due to be back in service next week – but a major refit in Hamilton is taking longer than expected and the ferry isn’t expected to return to service until mid to late July.

And….Captain Brian Johnson was greeted by a crowd of well-wishers last night as he piloted the ferry into Kingston for the last time.  Johnson retired after 26 years as captain and 34 years of service on the ferry.

Send a Kid to Camp

Family and Children’s Services of Frontenac, Lennox and Addington is hoping people will join in a text message campaign today to send a kid to summer camp.

From now until the end of July you can make a donation to the Give A Kid Summer Campaign by texting the word….”summer” to 45678.  You can donate up to $20.00 and it will show up on your bill.

Over 60 local kids got to experience summer camp last year thanks to $15,000 in donations.

Building a Community

A Kingston woman has written a book about the contributions of Italian immigrants to Kingston.

The book by Assunta Gerretsen is called Building a Community.

It tells the story of how Italian Canadians integrated into the life of Kingston while retaining their cultural heritage.

Gerretsen says they have been one of the most influential groups in the development of Kingston.

The book has been produced by the Italo-Canadian Club of Kingston to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the construction of the club’s hall.
