John Counter – Still Closed

Don’t forget a portion of John Counter Boulevard remains closed until late tonight.
The section of the road from Princess Street to Portsmouth Avenue is closed for repairs to the culverts.
The VIA station is still accessible from Princess Street.

Train Station

City council has voted 9-4 in favour of entering into discussions with a developer who wants to move the crumbling railway station on Montreal Street to Douglas Fluhrer Park.
Abna Investments is trying to buy the property where the Grand Trunk Railway station is located on Montreal Street from CN Rail.
Council agreed last night to let city staff discuss plans to rebuild the historic structure in the park on Kingston’s inner harbour.
Voting against were Rob Hutchison, Mary Rita-Holland, Jim Neill and Lisa Osanic.

WSE- City Council

The controversy over the Wellington Street extension continues.
City council received a report from CAO Gerard Hunt on the background of the project and the problems with removing it from Kingston’s official plan.
Several delegations spoke about the proposal to extend the street past Douglas Fluhrer Park to John Counter Boulevard.
Developer Ben Pilon, the Chamber of Commerce, Kingston Home Builders Association and Downtown Kingston spoke in favour of the extension – although the Chamber and Downtown Kingston both said if it isn’t built there should be an alternative.
The group WellingtonX…told council there is no evidence the project is needed.


Recreation Centre

City council has unanimously approved the location of the community centre in Pittsburgh District. The $10 million facility will be built in Grenadier Park – next to LaSalle Secondary School.

Transit

Grade 12 students may be able to ride Kingston Transit for free.
City council gave unanimous approval to a motion from councillor Mary Rita-Holland last night.
City staff will report back to council on options for free or low-cost summer transit passes for grade 12 students.

Woman Sentenced

A 28 year old woman has been sentenced to three years in prison for stabbing a man in an apartment on Joseph Street in February.
Mary Keewasin-Gliddy pleaded guilty on Monday to aggravated assault in the stabbing of a 35 year old man.
Other charges were dropped.
The woman had been transferred to a halfway house in Kingston to complete a previous sentence of three and a half years for manslaughter in Sioux Lookout.

9-1-1 Texts

People who have hearing or speech impairments will be able to text 9-1-1 in Kingston.
Kingston Police launched the new service yesterday.
It also covers Howe Island and Wolfe Island.
People using the service have to be registered to be able to communicate with 9-1-1 communications staff by text.

Astronaut – Queen’s Alumni Award

An astronaut will receive the highest honour from the Queen’s University Alumni Association on Saturday.
NASA astronaut Andrew Feustel is the recipient of the Alumni Achievement Award.
He earned his PhD in geological sciences from Queen’s in 1995 and will be honoured with several other alumni during an awards ceremony at the Isabel Centre for the Performing Arts Saturday night.
